Who Volunteers At Popejoy?

Members of the Front-of-House Team of Popejoy Hall, serve an important function as representatives of the most prestigious performance hall in the state of New Mexico.

Volunteers are an integral part of the success of this institution and the arts in Albuquerque. At the same time, volunteers are involved in the exciting life of the theatre, meet interesting people and enjoy a wide variety of performing art genres. We currently have approximately 250 volunteers.

What Volunteers Do

Popejoy's volunteers are the first point of contact for patrons at Popejoy Hall. Patrons can distinguish volunteers by the white and black uniforms they wear and their smiling faces. Their commitment and professionalism help make each show at Popejoy an unforgettable experience for all.

Volunteers serve in specific roles that include the following:

Lobby Greeters

Prior to opening the House, Lobby Greeters welcome patrons in the carpeted Popejoy Hall Lobby and pass out programs or playbills. They also assist with directions and information. They try to greet every patron and offer assistance at every opportunity. Greeters ask patrons if they need help finding their entrance to the hall. Greeters also help direct patrons to appropriate ticket lines for walk-up sales or will-call.

Information Kiosk

Volunteers that work the information kiosk maintain materials and ensure that supplies are stocked and ready for patrons. These supplies include: Kiosk information Book, Booster Buddies and donation jar, two types of Assisted Listening Devices (ALDs), ALD log book, index file box, etc. This volunteer also checks that all printed materials displayed in the kiosk are performance or CFA related and are not out of date. In addition, a limited number of Large Print programs are available for the visually impaired at Popejoy Presents events. Volunteers make sure that these special programs are distributed upon request at these events.

Ticket Takers

Ticket Takers are in charge of waiting for the cue from the House Manager to announce the house is open. They then prop the outside House doors open to let the patrons inside. They then use ticket scanners to scan tickets (most performances) or tear tickets and deposit the stubs in the ticket receptacles. Ticket takers are responsible for making sure all patrons, regardless of age, have a ticket. Each ticket taker will also check the date and time on the ticket to make sure that the patron is at the correct performance.

Ushers

Ushers serve to ensure patrons are correctly seated before the show begins. They are stationed throughout the house to help seating run smoothly. Ushers are responsible for being polite, friendly, and helpful.

Merchandise Sellers

Volunteers will help with the sale of Popejoy's merchandise line and may occasionally sell other merchandise depending on the show. Each show is different, and volunteers are given information on each show's merchandising procedures beforehand.

Lounge Hosting

Volunteers serve as host, assist in the set up and ensure clean up of receptions. The Benefactors’ Lounge is our VIP reception area for those who make charitable contributions to Popejoy Hall. The Lounge is opened one hour prior to each show and at intermission only for our Ovation and Broadway shows.
