Martha Graham Dance Company
Appalachian Spring

March 13, 2009, 8:00pm

Martha Graham transformed dance. Her choreography opened the way for dancers to express the fullest range of human emotions. Aaron Copeland created iconic music for our country, music that sang in the heart of Americans. When he began composing “Appalachian Spring,” he called it simply “Ballet for Martha.” When Graham heard it, she pinned it down to an Appalachian locale, using the music to tell the story of newlyweds in a Shaker region of Pennsylvania. The music describes open fields and endless possibilities and Graham’s ballet is as simple and direct as its subject. Both the music and the dance have become American classics.
