About The Show

American Masterpiece Porgy and Bess first premiered in 1935 featuring an all African American cast—the first opera to do so. Based on poet Dubose Heyward’s tale of jealousy and passion in Charleston, South Carolina, it was converted into an opera with the addition of George Gershwin’s brilliant bluesy score. The opera’s best known songs, “Summertime,” “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin,’” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” are beautifully performed in this superb production.
